RELICS

Relic: “An object from the past, that has no modern use but is valued for its meaning or importance in history.

“Seeing beauty towards things that are displeasing, discarded or disregarded, is what triggers my sensitivity.”

This particular body of work started out simply as experimental works in the print studio in 2011. Having access to a print studio in Cincinnati, I started collecting discarded metal plates. I experimented with Intaglio printmaking, from impressions left behind using aquatint (chemical) and water to create the works you see before you.

While trying to identify why I find certain mundane things beautiful, I explored the meaning of beauty in art and philosophy. Through process and experimentation, my ideas deal with the essence of beauty to be found in transformation. A space where something once lived, leaves its mark but has now taken on a new form.

I chose to display these works for the first time in Tunisia in 2025, as they reminded me of the ruins of Carthage where we live. The Relics prints, similar to the ruins, tell a story of what once was, leaving behind impressions of what is, and reminiscences of what will be interpreted into the future. The print work in the same way has been printed in these 3 stages throughout the series.

In conclusion, my art has grown into a comprehensive study of actions, reactions and impressions. A study of fragments composed in different stages to narrate its own story of the past, present and impressions into the future.
