ANXIETY
“Anxiety is the rust of life…”
We waste so much time agitating ourselves over silly little things that eat us up from inside to out. Like a leaky faucet, the monotony of a drop can lead to madness. Why?
The passage of time between each drop is documented time in a bucket. The sound we hear is a prolonged alarm reminding us that time is passing – increasing our disposition and restlessness.
But there is tranquility in passing, and comfort in slowing down. Each drop is each thought—a thought “I wasted one extra moment in time”– a thought that did not get washed out in a rushed passage of time. It is a moment that spoke for itself and a truth in itself.
Drip drop drip drop…
I am fascinated by how something so tiny has so much Power; Power to drive a sane man mad and concrete insubstantial. Every drop in its persistence has force.
Drip drop drip drop…
Motion and monotony is tranquility.
Patterns are in sound.
Documentation is in water.
And time is anxiety.
Drip drop drip drop…
is a pattern in motion and monotony
Proposed Plan:
Place the rusted bucket in the gallery.
Above the bucket will be a tube running alongside a large pipe in the room. The tube is connected to an IV bag and is controlled by a pressure dropper so that water drips every 6 seconds consistently.
The sound element of the installation is enhanced through a discreet speaker placed to the side of the window. The sound of each drop is pre-recorded to the same 6 second consistency and will play back on the speaker cohesively with the dripping water.
My plan for the corner is to keep it dimly lit, with just one spot light directed to the bucket at an angle. The spot light will function to cast a fleeting shadow of each drop falling every six seconds.
